Cipla’s net profit rises 4% amid leadership change

Mumbai: Pharma major Cipla has reported a 4% year on year rise in consolidated net profit to Rs.1,351 crore in the September quarter from Rs. 1,303 crore last year. Revenues rose correspondingly by 8% to Rs.7,500 crore, mostly on the back of its strong respiratory and branded generics portfolio.

The company has risen to become India’s fourth largest drug maker by revenue, and the largest by volume, gaining acclaim for its $1 HIV/AIDS anti-retroviral therapy besides its large portfolio of generics in the respiratory, urology, cardiology and anti-retroviral drugs manufactured from 46 sites worldwide.

Cipla has delivered a solid growth, supported by new brands and innovations. Next year, the company is looking to expand its respiratory portfolio with 4 launches, including a generic version of Advair, a drug used to treat asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), besides three other peptide drugs.

Many of these achievements have been credited to its current MD and CEO, Umang Vohra, who has worked to expand Cipla’s reach across geographies. On October 30, Cipla announced a leadership change, with Umang making way for Achin Gupta, the current Global Chief Operating Officer (GCOO), to head the company as he isn’t seeking a re-appointment after his term ends on March 31, 2026.

“My ten years at Cipla has been filled with immense pride in what we’ve built together. Guided by our purpose of Caring for Life, I have had the privilege of working with passionate teams who consistently put patients first and drive innovation across the business. I’m deeply grateful to our Chairman, Dr Y K Hamied, and the Board for their trust and support throughout this journey. As I prepare to hand over the reins, I’m confident that Achin Gupta will lead Cipla forward with vision and purpose. I look forward to supporting him and the leadership team to ensure a smooth transition,” Umang Vohra said.

“It is an honour to be entrusted with the responsibility of leading Cipla as its next MD & GCEO. Cipla’s legacy of purpose-driven innovation and patient-centric care is deeply inspiring, and I am committed to building on the strong foundation laid by Umang and the leadership team. Over the past few years, I’ve had the privilege of working closely with teams across the organization and witnessing firsthand the passion, resilience, and commitment that define Cipla. As we move forward, my focus will remain on driving sustainable growth, deepening our impact across markets, and continuing to innovate with purpose,” Achin Gupta, MD & GCEO designate, added.

Following the news, Cipla’s shares are down 2.54% to Rs.1,541 per share.
