After BlackRock, now German reinsurer Allianz to partner with Jio

Mumbai: German reinsurer Allianz SE recently broke its 24-year-old JV with Bajaj Finserv to announce its intent to partner with Jio Financial Services Limited (JFSL) for a reinsurance joint venture. This comes just months after BlackRock re-entered the mutual fund space in India with a venture aimed at capitalising on Jio’s brute digital reach.

The partnership will also involve setting up 2 separate ventures for general and life insurance after meeting regulatory and statutory approvals. The JV aims to leverage Allianz’s existing Allianz Re and Allianz Commercial portfolios in India. Allianz’s previous experience in the market will be crucial here, and both companies are aiming to disrupt the market with a digital-first approach, similar to Jio’s JV with BlackRock for Mutual Funds.

“India is witnessing a transformative surge in insurance demand, driven by rising prosperity, growing financial awareness, and rapid digital adoption. This partnership, combining Allianz’s global reinsurance expertise with JFSL’s deep understanding of the Indian market and strong digital infrastructure, aims to deliver innovative and customized reinsurance solutions to insurers. Aligned with the national goal of ‘Insurance for All by 2047’, we are committed to building a stronger and more inclusive insurance ecosystem that ensures broader access to protection for every Indian. We are excited to shape this transformative journey together,” Isha M. Ambani, Non-executive Director, Jio Financial Services Limited, said.

Currently, India’s reinsurance market remains mostly concentrated, with state-owned GIC Re competing with global heavyweights like Munich Re and Swiss Re. With this JV, both companies aim to deeply embed themselves in India’s insurance ecosystem.

India remains the 10th largest insurance market with life insurance premiums crossing Rs.8.7 lakh and non-life premiums reaching nearly Rs.3.1 lakh crore. According to a study by Insurance broker PolicyX, more than 65% of respondents aren’t comfortable buying insurance online, and most life insurance policies sold are done through neighbourhood agents who have built customer relationships for years.

Jio will find it extremely difficult to change public perceptions, as the personal connect needed for such long-term services remains vital. How the company leverages its strengths in reach for insurance products remains to be seen.
