New Delhi: Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg has expressed growing concern over Facebook’s declining cultural relevance, as revealed by emails from April 2022 between him and Facebook head Tom Alison. These emails, presented during the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) antitrust trial against Meta, highlight Zuckerberg’s worries that despite steady user engagement in many regions, Facebook’s cultural significance is rapidly fading, which he fears could signal future problems for the platform’s health.
Zuckerberg pointed out that the traditional “friending” feature on Facebook has lost its appeal. Many users’ friend lists are outdated and do not reflect the people they genuinely want to connect with or hear from. He admitted that he personally prefers following influencers on platforms like Instagram or Twitter, which use a “following” model rather than Facebook’s “friending” system. This shift in user behavior is a key reason why Facebook might be losing its relevance.
To address this, Zuckerberg proposed three potential strategies to Facebook’s leadership, including a radical idea to wipe users’ friend graphs clean and have them start fresh. He also mentioned Facebook’s efforts to pivot towards community-based features such as Groups and community messaging. However, he remained uncertain about how much further these community features could be pushed to regain relevance, despite some optimism about their potential.
This internal concern surfaced just months after Facebook launched Reels, a short-form video feature designed to compete with TikTok. The move to Reels reflects Facebook’s broader shift from a platform primarily focused on personal connections to one emphasizing entertainment and content discovery.
Facebook’s main purpose of friend connection has transformed into something else according to Zuckerberg during his FTC trial testimony. He stated that the original “friend” concept of the platform had fully disappeared while Facebook shifted toward offering diverse discovery and entertainment content. These changes resulted in “endless feed of AI-generated content” which diverted Facebook from its primary goal of social connection establishment.
Zuckerberg maintained his support for Meta’s acquisitions of Instagram and WhatsApp by explaining how Facebook now concentrates on messaging and content consumption instead of maintaining traditional friend relationships. Users now engage with numerous communities and different types of groups though the essential importance of personal friends has decreased to some degree.
The change in user behavior estimates something, users who have been on Facebook for long report their feeds now consist mainly of advertisements together with recommended content and posts from sources they have not authorized to share information. Facebook users now experience less meaningful social connections because they feel burdened by fabricated news stories along with political updates and AI-generated content. The response from users has been a reduction of their Facebook activity or complete platform abandonment.
