New Delhi: Zomato has unveiled a new policy that will exclude dishes that include analogue dairy items from its menus. The food delivery giant is now implementing a zero tolerance policy and has already pulled products out of the menu from restaurants which have stated their food includes analogue dairy.
This move is to enhance the quality, transparency and safety of food products for the consumers. This move actually comes as Zomato works to keep its users informed about what they are consuming, and also to ensure that restaurants cleave to its guidelines when they are put food items on Zomato.
What is analogue dairy?
Analogue products are those which are produced which are similar to dairy products either in appearance or in taste or both, but are not the same; may include different ingredients than a normal dairy product. For instance, instead of ingredients of milk, vegetable-based ingredients like vegetable oils, starches and plant proteins can be used in making analogue paneer.
Zomato hopes restaurants will make it easy for customers to spot what they’re eating. The company has intended to ask its restaurant partners to verify labels and other ingredient information provided by their vendors to ensure that the food written on the platform is correct.
What Zomato is asking restaurants to do
Analogue dairy products must be acted upon immediately by the restaurants. They may either use natural dairy products or minimize or eliminate analogues dairy on their menus if they are not able to change them right now.
Zomato has also put out a warning that those who don’t comply with the new policy may have to be delisted from Zomato. It has the authority to remove any food listing that is contravening its rules,” the company said.
The phrase “better food for more people” is Zomato’s mission statement and that includes ensuring customers’ well-being, and restaurant partners’ clarity about the quality of food being sold, the CEO said.
The new policy is therefore not a ban on a particular popular dish. Rather than, Zomato is targeting dishes made with analogue dairy ingredients and wants restaurants to provide more accurate information about what goes into the food they sell.
