New Delhi: ByteDance founder Zhang Yiming, the creator of TikTok, has surpassed India’s richest Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani as Asia’s second richest person. TikTok’s and Douyin’s Chinese maker ByteDance is increasingly earning big, with Zhang now boasting immense wealth.
By June 2026, Zhang Yiming’s net worth will have reached about $92.8 billion. The rise has helped him beat Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani in the Asia wealth list. In addition, today Zhang is the wealthiest person in China, making his name one that sounds more familiar to a global audience.
ByteDance’s performance and valuation have been a big contributor to Zhang’s wealth. Although he left his chairmanship position in 2021, Zhang is still one of the top shareholders of the company. Through its popular social media app TikTok, ByteDance still keeps profiting from the global market. As of yet, ByteDance is still taking full advantage of TikTok, which is one of the largest social media platforms in the world.
The idea of launching a global content platform as an AI-driven personalized experience was born when Zhang decided to form a new company, ByteDance, in 2012. Later, the company introduced TikTok, a short video app that rapidly turned into a worldwide phenomenon and re-shaped the movie app sector. There are hundreds of millions of people using TikTok today, and it is a big part of why ByteDance is successful.
Zhang’s fortune has skyrocketed in recent years. His net worth was first reported in the millions, back in 2019, at $13 million. His stock has more than sevenfold since then, making him one of the biggest winners in the global technology market.
Meanwhile, Mukesh Ambani still has his finger firmly on the pulse of one of the most powerful business houses in Asia with his Reliance Industries, which spans the energy, telecom, retail, and digital services segments. Ambani may be off third place in Asia’s wealth list, but his name remains in the top 10 of the world’s billionaires.
The updated scores are an illustration of technologies and entrepreneurs becoming more significant in each nation’s wealth generation. While digital platforms gain ground and buzz for millions of people, their founders, like Zhang Yiming, are seeing their fortunes go up rapidly.
