New Delhi: N. Chandrasekaran will going to stepping down from the Chairman post of Tata Sons after the end of his tenure on February 20, 2027. And, by making this shocking announcement, he has also compounded one of the biggest leadership puzzles for the Tata Group who will going totake the control of Tata Sons in the next coming years?
On August 12, Chandrasekaran told the Tata Sons board that he will not going to be seeking another term. Chandrasekaran has also requested the board to initiate the succession planning process as soon as possible to ensure there should be a smooth transition after his tenure ends. Since February 2017, when N. Chandrasekaran was officially been appointed for the Tata Sons and has been instrumental in growing and expanding the Tata group in technology, aviation, electronics and other businesses.
There isn’t a confirmed successor at this time. It will going to be up to the Tata Sons board to see whether they want to appoint someone other than Chandrasekaran to head the holding company.
Neville Tata emerges as a name to watch
The name that has come to the fore is the name of Neville Tata, son of the CEO of the Tata Trusts, Noel Tata. Neville is a part of the next generation of the Tata family and has already shouldered roles within Companies that are associated with the Tata family.
But, as of now, there’s no official word on whether Neville Tata will assume the roles of the next Chairman of Tata Sons. His name is also on the agenda as part of the succession process, but the final decision will depend on the Tata Sons board and Tata Trusts.
The other option may be to recruit an inside or outside corporate leader, someone with experience. The organization has traditionally featured family and professional leaders, and so a few options are still available.
Why the succession matters
The change comes at an important time for the Tata Group. Tata Sons owns leading enterprises in various industries such as Information Technology, automobiles, steel, aviation, consumer goods and electronics.
Tata Trusts holds approximately 66% of the shares of Tata Sons, and thus has a significant influence on the company’s decisions regarding the holding company. The succession process is even more significant with differences between Tata Sons and Tata Trusts regarding the future direction of the group and leadership.
Chandrasekaran will thus be replaced by a significant change in leadership for the group. Existing businesses will have to be managed by the new Chairman, while he has to keep creating strategies for the newer fields in which Tata can invest with a lot of aggressiveness like electronics, aviation and digital businesses.
At this present time, it’s Neville Tata, but it will be too early to name him the confirmed replacement. The succession plan will be discussed by the Tata Sons board in the lead-up to Chandrasekaran’s February 2027 expiration date.
