Tata Steel to decarbonize its ironmaking by deploying EASyMelt Technology at its Jamshedpur plant

New Delhi: Tata Steel is looking to decarbonize its ironmaking operations in Jamshedpur with a path-breaking technology that hasn’t been used before. In fact, this will be the first time the EASyMelt Technology is being implemented globally, helping Tata Steel stay ahead of its peers by offering ‘green steel’.

Cutting Emissions by 50%

With steelmaking being known as highly toxic and polluting, this new technology aims to lower the carbon dioxide emissions by more than 50% through its traditional blast furnace operations.

Tata Steel aims to retrofit its existing technology with EASyMelt, offering it a ‘hard to abate’ sector solution. Through this, it avoids the astronomical costs to build new hydrogen-based plants while radically reducing its carbon footprint.

For this, Tata Steel has roped in Paul Wurth, S.A (Luxembourg), part of the SMS Group GmbH, to implement this technology at its ‘E’ Blast Furnace in a phased manner. Following this, Tata Steel will work jointly with the SMS Group to implement the EASyMelt Technology at its other steel works.

“The transition to low-carbon steelmaking will be shaped by our ability to reimagine and transform existing production ecosystems. At Tata Steel, we are advancing this shift through a focused blend of technology, innovation, and strong partnerships. Our collaboration with SMS Group marks a significant milestone, accelerating our journey towards achieving net zero.” T V Narendran, CEO and Managing Director, Tata Steel, said in a press release.

“We appreciate Tata Steel’s trust in our abilities. This commitment from an industry leader enables us to bring our EASyMelt technology to life. Building the first EASyMelt on an industrial scale is a significant milestone and paves the way for future brownfield decarbonization projects,” Jochen Burg, CEO, SMS Group, added.
