New Delhi: Tata Electronics has linked a partnership with Japan’s FUJIFILM Corporation for the development of India’s semiconductor materials. The deal was announced from New Delhi and Tokyo on 17th September 2026.
As per this agreement, Fujifilm will manufacture and supply special chemicals that are crucial for the upcoming chip factory of Tata Electronics at Dholera, Gujarat using its expertise in the field of chip materials. The objective is to serve India’s target of being a big player in global integrated circuit manufacturing field.
Why this partnership matters
At present, the majority of chip manufacturers have to import materials from abroad. This new partnership proposes to change that. Instead, Fujifilm and Tata Electronics want to develop these materials here in India to create a robust supply chain that doesn’t need to rely on imports heavily. Fujifilm will also be helping Indian chemical players acquire Fujifilm’s technology and quality specifications for these high purity chemicals.
For this, Fujifilm will spend nearly ₹800 crore ($83 million) to construct a plant manufacturing semiconductor materials in the Dholera Special Investment Region. The plant will ensure that materials are always available for Tata Electronics’ chip factory that will be India’s first large-scale commercial chip plant.
What the leaders said
Dr. Randhir Thakur, the CEO and Managing Director of Tata Electronics, commented on the partnership and highlighted its significance in establishing a robust and trustworthy chip manufacturing ecosystem in India. A collaboration with Fujifilm will enhance the supply chain and help India move closer on the vision of becoming a trusted hub for manufacturing chips around the world, he said.
It is a promising market for Fujifilm to expand because of the company’s chip materials business, as said by Teiichi Goto, President & CEO of FUJIFILM Holdings Corporation. He also said the rapidly growing semiconductor sector in India is a significant opportunity and this collaboration would contribute to the advancement of the country’s chip manufacturing.
About the Dholera Chip factory
Tata Electronics is developing this “fab” (fabrication facility) at a cost of approximately ₹91,000 crore or $11 billion. The factory will be able to produce chips of different sizes, ranging from 28 nanometers to 110 nanometers. In the car, phone, computer, data storage device, wireless and AI.
The progress of construction of the fab is gaining pace and such collaboration with Fujifilm, considered as one of the stepping stones to propel Tata Electronics to become a strong player in the global chip-making world, is welcome.
For Fujifilm, the company will continue to provide the semiconductor market with its extensive product lineup as well as with its worldwide manufacturing infrastructure with sites in Japan, the U.S., Europe and elsewhere in Asia.
