Swiggy Instamart asked to furnish details for 9 FSSAI notices alleging food safety violations

New Delhi: In a major setback to Swiggy Instamart, the  Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has officially issued nine notices to the quick commerce platform after an influx of severe consumer grievances were not adequately addressed.

The complaints allege that the platforms dark stores dispatched expired, rotten and foul smelling food items directly to household doorsteps, breaching compliance rules set under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

The Specific Items Flagged

According to the notices, sensitive product categories were targeted, including everyday staples and health supplements:

  • Eggs: Multiple consumer filings flagged deliveries of cracked, structurally compromised, or heavily foul-smelling organic eggs that were unfit for human consumption. The eggs were marketed under the unlicensed ‘NOICE’ brand, while some from the Akshayakalpa Organic brand were also delivered this way.
  • Spoiled Baby Formula:  According to the notice, an infant food formulation was found in a highly deteriorated condition, with signs of contamination and improper handling and storage.

What Swiggy Instamart Must Furnish

The FSSAI has ordered Swiggy Instamart to immediately furnish a detailed explanation, backed by documentary evidence, addressing the alleged violations and the circumstances that led to the incidents. It has also sought details of Swiggy’s quality assurance systems, food safety monitoring systems and internal controls as well.

Delivery Models Under the Scanner

Industry exports point out the underlying friction to the breakneck operating speed of the quick commerce model. To fulfill deliveries quickly, floor pickers often work with tight time limits, which can lead to oversight in checking physical packaging seals, freshness tags or product expiry stamps.

This development will intensify the scrutiny on quick commerce platforms, where concerns regarding storage conditions, inventory management and product quality have surfaced periodically.
