Sunjay Kapur Estate battle, family dispute over ₹30,000 Crore Fortune

New Delhi: The sudden death of industrialist Sunjay Kapur, founder and chairman of Sona Comstar, has turned into a high-profile family battle over wealth. Sunjay passed away during a polo match in England on June 12, leaving behind an estate said to be worth nearly ₹30,000 crore. What should have been a private family matter has now become a legal storm, with claims, counterclaims, and even allegations of forgery.

A that will change everything

The turning point came when a will dated March 21 surfaced weeks after Sunjay’s death. The will reportedly gives his entire personal estate to his third wife, Priya Kapur. But here’s the twist, this document was shown to the family only on July 30, during a meeting at Delhi’s Taj Mansingh Hotel, more than seven weeks later. Naturally, suspicions were raised. Why the delay? Why wasn’t it shared earlier?

From Sunjay’s second marriage with Karisma Kapoor, his two children, Samaira and Kiaan, have challenged the will in Delhi High Court. They are demanding a one-fifth share each of their father’s assets. Their legal side claims Priya first denied the existence of any will, only to suddenly produce one later. They also point out that the will is unregistered, which makes the matter even more controversial.

For now, the court has asked Priya to submit details of all movable and immovable assets owned by Sunjay as of June 12. The next big hearing is set for October 9.

The children’s side has gone further, alleging the will is a forgery and that Priya, along with her associates, tried to hide it to grab the entire estate. They have asked the court to put a temporary stop on selling or transferring any of Sunjay’s properties until the truth comes out.

Priya Kapur’s defense

Priya’s lawyers, on the other hand, say she is Sunjay’s lawfully wedded wife and the case itself is “not maintainable.” They argue that Karisma’s children have already received around ₹1,900 crore from the RK Family Trust just before the case was filed. According to Priya, this shows they are not being left out, raising the bigger question, how much is enough?

Mother joins the fight

Adding more drama, Sunjay’s mother Rani Kapur has also opposed the will. She says she was completely excluded and even alleged that her own assets went missing after Priya entered the family. Calling the process “unholy,” she revealed she had to send multiple unanswered emails just to get information about the will.

This isn’t just a fight over money; it’s a fight over trust, relationships, and legacy. Sunjay’s sudden passing has left his family divided, his widow, ex-wife, children, and mother are now all on different sides. It’s not rare in India to see family property battles stretch for years, but here the scale is extraordinary because of the ₹30,000 crore fortune involved.
