New Delhi: Shell and SparkCognition have announced a collaboration to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) technology in deep sea exploration and production aimed at enhancing offshore oil output. SparkCognition, a big-data analytics firm, will provide its AI algorithms to process and analyze vast amounts of seismic data, assisting Shell, the largest oil producer in the US Gulf of Mexico, in identifying new oil reservoirs.

Gabriel Guerra, Shell’s vice president of innovation and performance, expressed the company’s commitment to exploring innovative methods to transform their exploration processes. The primary objectives of this collaboration are to improve operational efficiency, increase exploration success, and accelerate production. By implementing SparkCognition’s technology, the time required for exploratory endeavours can be significantly reduced from nine months to under nine days, as announced by the companies involved.

Bruce Porter, the chief science officer at SparkCognition, emphasized the transformative potential of generative AI for seismic imaging, which can disrupt and revolutionize the exploration process. This innovation has wide-ranging implications and can pave the way for significant advancements in the industry. By employing fewer seismic data scans, the technology can generate subsurface images effectively, leading to improved deep-sea preservation efforts. Seismic technology operates by transmitting sound waves to explore subsurface regions.

In addition to streamlining the exploration workflow, utilizing fewer seismic surveys also offers cost-saving benefits in high-performance computing. This collaboration between Shell and SparkCognition not only aims to enhance oil production and exploration efficiency but also demonstrates a commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technologies to drive progress in the oil and gas industry.

By harnessing the power of AI and big data analytics, Shell and SparkCognition are poised to optimize deep sea exploration processes, uncovering new oil reservoirs more swiftly and accurately. This joint effort exemplifies the industry’s dedication to embracing innovative solutions to meet growing energy demands and address environmental challenges.
