New Delhi: The decision made by the Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff initiated new conversations within the technology industry on how artificial intelligence was slowly altering jobs, recruitment practices, and corporate organizational structure.
The company CEO stated that AI systems are currently assisting Salesforce engineers to perform their coding tasks significantly faster than usual. The productivity of engineers rose by over 30 percent as AI systems are becoming increasingly used to develop software codes, perform quality assurance, and solve technical problems.
The software corporation currently employs approximately 15,000 software engineers across the globe. However, the organization is not planning to add more engineers. In its stead, the company plans to increase the efficiency of engineers by integrating them with AI technologies. The CEO explained that programmers are currently functioning more as managers and decision-makers, while AI is taking over repetitive coding activities that take too much time to perform.
On top of that, Salesforce seems ready to invest into AI infrastructure. Rumors say that the company is willing to invest up to almost $300 million in AI services provided by startup Anthropic. These AI technologies are supposed to be used in software development processes, automation activities, and operations performed by large corporations.
These steps appear to be part of a larger trend observed in the global technology sector. As opposed to previous attempts to experiment with AI technologies, companies start using them in their day-to-day operations to increase the speed of performance and productivity while reducing costs.
This is clearly demonstrated by recent actions of Salesforce. Over the course of the past year, the software company managed to cut its customer support workforce in half, going from about 9,000 employees down to less than 5,000 after starting using AI-powered chatbots that deal with clients’ demands automatically. Routine problems and complaints are currently processed by the system, which does not require human intervention anymore.
However, although Salesforce decides to cease hiring software engineers, the company still plans to hire sales employees. According to the CEO’s statements, the firm plans to hire thousands of employees to sell the company’s AI services around the globe. Thus, although automation reduces the need for some types of employees, personal interactions still remain essential for most businesses.
The news caused a mixed reaction among the public. On the one hand, people agree that AI technologies are likely to help corporations become more efficient and free human resources to engage in more creative activities. On the other hand, many people are concerned about the fact that automation may negatively affect employment opportunities, particularly for recently graduated engineers.
Today, major technology companies across the world tend to invest a lot of money in the development of AI technologies to automate their operations. Tools that allow automating software development process, analyzing data, interacting with customers, and conducting other operations are becoming increasingly popular. Experts expect that automation technologies will shape the future of the labor market for the coming decade.
Thus, the decision made by Salesforce marks a transition point of software companies operating in modern conditions. The company decides to cooperate with AI in order to make its processes even faster and more efficient. At the same time, this step poses a very interesting question: how to balance innovation with employment opportunities for people as AI is continuously developing?
