Lucknow: Precision materials and engineering firm PTC Industries has secured a prestigious order from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)’s Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) to transform titanium sponge into aerospace-grade ingots, as per a press release to the bourses.
As per the requirement, PTC Industries will convert 40 tonnes of Grade 1 Titanium sponge (the raw material) into Ti-6Al-4V Titanium alloy ingots, meeting highly advanced quality and purity requirements for space and aerospace applications.
For this PTC’s team is using the Double Vacuum Arc Remelting (VAR) secondary melting process, using Titanium electrodes under a high vacuum electric arc. This highly complex technique is essential to eliminate inclusions, dissolved gases and other imperfections in the alloy, which can adversely affect the mechanical performance of the resultant ingot. PTC is one of only two companies that have the expertise to process Titanium sponge, helping India reduce its reliance on imports.
This Titanium sponge will be used by ISRO for making titanium alloys to support India’s space initiatives.
PTC is expected to execute the order within a year. This development strengthens domestic capability under the Government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, with PTC also working with leading PSUs, including Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and BrahMos Aerospace for mission-critical material expertise.
To further expand its reach, PTC is investing in a new facility in Lucknow to develop a fully integrated Titanium and Superallow manufacturing ecosystem. With over six decades of experience, PTC Industries is now looking to expand beyond India and compete for orders for leading OEMs.
