Priya Sachdev Kapur, polo tragedy, and a ₹30,000 Crore legacy

New Delhi: Priya Sachdev Kapur is once again in the spotlight, but not for fashion or business this time. Instead, it’s the massive ₹30,000 crore Kapur family fortune that’s making headlines, and Priya is right in the middle of it. After the sudden death of her husband, businessman Sunjay Kapur, a high-stakes family drama has exploded, grabbing attention across business circles and Bollywood fans alike.

Who is Priya Sachdev Kapur?

Not just a socialite, Priya is a sharp businesswoman. She studied math and business management at University College London, and even worked at Credit Suisse in London in their M&A (mergers and acquisitions) department. After getting experience abroad, she came back to India and co-founded Rock N Shop, one of India’s first luxury e-commerce platforms. She is also a director at Aureus Investment and serves as a non-executive director at Sona Comstar, the company now at the centre of this family dispute.

But that’s not all, Priya once dabbled in acting too. Back in the early 2000s, she appeared in TV ads (including one with Kareena Kapoor) and acted in a small role in the 2005 film ‘Neal ’n’ Nikki’.

Her personal life has also been in the news. Before marrying Sunjay Kapur in 2017, Priya was married to American hotelier Vikram Chatwal, and they had a public custody battle before parting ways.

Everything changed on June 12, 2025, when Sunjay Kapur passed away due to a heart attack during a polo match in England. The news came as a shock, not just to the business world but also to Bollywood, since Sunjay was previously married to actress Karisma Kapoor. Both Karisma and Saif Ali Khan attended the funeral, showing how closely tied this family is to the entertainment industry.

After Sunjay’s death, things quickly got ugly. His mother, Rani Kapur, wrote a strong letter to the board of Sona Comstar, alleging that she was locked in a room and forced to sign papers. She said her personal bank accounts were blocked and accused some people, without naming them, of pretending to represent the family. While she didn’t say Priya’s name, many believe she was pointing towards her.

Rani called it “gross illegalities” and hinted that a major legal battle is on the way. This has turned into one of the most high-profile corporate succession fights in India right now.

This story isn’t just about one family. It shows how even rich and powerful families can fall apart when big money is involved. What makes this case more eye-catching is the mix of corporate power, glamour, and real human drama.

Priya Sachdev Kapur, once known for fashion and luxury, is now being seen in a totally different light, as a possible power player in a multi-crore business empire. Some see her as ambitious and smart, others as controversial.
