Porsche and TCS sign $1.46 billion AI partnership to build future of mobility

New Delhi: German luxury carmaker Porsche is inking the largest IT services firm Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) on a €1.25 billion ($1.46 billion) five-year strategic partnership. The partnership will involve the implementation of AI in Porsche’s business, spanning manufacturing, engineering, operations and Customer Experience.

Under the deal, TCS will also take over 100 percent of Porsche’s management and IT consulting arm, MHP Management- und IT-Beratung GmbH, which is headquartered in Germany. The enterprise value of the acquisition is €320 million or around $373 million. The transaction should be closed in the coming three to four months, subject to regulatory action in Europe.

TCS to build AI centre for Porsche

A dedicated AI Mobility Centre of Excellence for Porsche is one of the integral components of the collaboration. The centre will focus on making carmaker AI-ize various aspects of their business.

The centre will work to translate AI concepts into realistic and feasible solutions, TCS said. The technologies can potentially be applied in areas like smart manufacturing, vehicle engineering, business operations and customer services.

At a time when AI is transforming the global automotive landscape, the partnership is a fitting collaboration. The software, data, and AI are going to increasingly play a role in enhancing the production process, create features for the new vehicles and provide a superior digital experience for the customer at the car company.

Why MHP Acquisition matters

MHP has around 4,500 employees and specialises in automotive and industrial consulting. It has expertise in the fields of AI, SAP, digital manufacturing, business transformation and connected mobility.

TCS’s acquisition of MHP will aid the company in bolstering its sales in Germany and the broader European automotive industry. It will also enable the Indian IT firm a greater penetration to Porsche’s automotive ecosystem and expand the technology services it offers in the manufacturing industry.

The agreement is an element of Porsche’s strategy of being more focused on the main business and applying more efficient technologies. With its expertise in automotive technology and the TCS’ AI and digital technology expertise, Porsche said there was potential to boost innovation and competitiveness.

A big move for TCS

The agreement is noteworthy for TCS, as the Indian IT sector is experiencing a substantial transformation with companies leveraging AI to boost their operations. But traditional IT services are feeling the squeeze as companies seek alternative, more automated, solutions and options that incorporate AI.

Through the Porsche alliance, TCS is a chance to demonstrate the practical applications of AI in a global automaker. It also bolsters the firm’s efforts to become a leading AI-powered technology services company.

In terms of overall contracts, this one between Porsche and TCS is not a big IT contract deal. It links up Porsche’s automotive know-how and TCS’s technology and AI expertise, combining the two firms’ desire to develop increasingly software-based, intelligent mobility solutions.
