New Delhi: India’s startup ecosystem has been transformed over the past few years. Growing out of a few major cities by previous standards, it now draws young innovators from all parts of the country. Startups are building businesses, creating jobs and new opportunities – trends the government wants to encourage even further.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to the nation on Saturday on the occasion of 80 years of Independence about the contribution of the country’s youth to building a developed India. He also mentioned the government’s Rs 1 lakh crore Innovation Fund, encouraging young Indians to put their ideas forward, even with few resources to start with.
More than 2.5 lakh startups registered
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said more than 2.5 lakh registered startups have been created under the Startup India campaign.
According to him, young entrepreneurs are not just creating jobs for themselves. Their businesses are also creating employment for other people.
“Today, through the Startup India campaign, more than 2.5 lakh registered startups have been created across the country,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said.
The numbers show how much entrepreneurship has grown in India. Startups are no longer limited to technology companies or a few well-known business hubs. Entrepreneurs are working across different sectors and in different parts of the country.
Rs 1 lakh crore Innovation Fund
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also spoke about the government’s Rs 1 lakh crore Innovation Fund, asking young Indians to bring their ideas forward.
“A Rs 1 lakh crore Innovation Fund has been announced by the Government of India,” he said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi added that the government would ensure there was no shortage of resources for young people with ideas.
For someone trying to build a business, getting money at the early stage can be difficult. An idea may look promising, but turning it into an actual product or business often requires funding, people and time.
The new fund is intended to support ideas and capabilities. How the money is eventually deployed and how widely it reaches entrepreneurs will be important for its impact.
Digital access is also helping
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also mentioned Digital India, affordable data and Skill India as factors that have opened up more opportunities for young people.
He said affordable data had given fresh strength to India’s youth.
Easy access to the internet has made it simpler for businesses to reach customers, sell products and offer services online. It has also helped entrepreneurs outside the biggest cities participate in the digital economy.
Still, money and internet access are only part of the picture. A startup needs customers, good execution and a business model that can work over the long term.
With more than 2.5 lakh registered startups already in the country, the Innovation Fund could give more young entrepreneurs a chance to take their ideas from the early stage to a real business.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s message on Independence Day was clear: young Indians should dream big, bring their ideas forward and make use of the opportunities available to them.
