OpenAI signs big cloud deal but sparks debate over AI’s huge energy use

New Delhi: Recently, OpenAI announced a massive cloud computing deal that enables it to run AI models on an enormous number of powerful servers. Although this sounds exciting to technology fans, many experts are now asking whether this push will further deteriorate the already growing crisis of energy consumption, especially in regard to AI.

The deal now means that OpenAI can use more data centers than ever, raising its demand for electricity. Data centers use tons of power to operate and cool thousands of servers. All that power usually comes from non-renewable sources, such as coal or natural gas, which emit lots of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. This has made climate activists and researchers very worried. They say such scaling up of AI so fast will only contribute to accelerating climate change rather than helping find greener alternatives.

On the other hand, OpenAI claims that having access to such large-scale infrastructure is important for training smarter, capable AI systems. This growth is what we need for breakthroughs in medicine, science, and education, they argue. But not everyone agrees. They say if we don’t solve the energy problem, this big AI push could have long-term negative effects on our environment and our future.

Some researchers say that companies like OpenAI need to invest in green energy, solar, wind, or other renewable power and improve the energy efficiency of their models. They believe AI growth should not come at the cost of the planet. Without that, they warn, we may be building AI on a foundation that threatens the very world it hopes to improve.
