OpenAI scores major AI talent win as Google Gemini Co-lead Noam Shazeer joins company

New Delhi: OpenAI has just made one of the most significant talent acquisitions of the AI era when Noam Shazeer, an important figure in the creation of artificial intelligence models for Google, announced his departure from Google and his resignation to OpenAI.

On June 18, Cloud Ventures’ Shazeer, who previously coled the development of Gemini at Google and was the company’s Vice President of Engineering, confirmed he was leaving. His appointment comes in the middle of OpenAI’s anticipated public listing and is actually particularly crucial for the venture.

The relocation underscores the intensified rivalry between the leading AI firms, including OpenAI, Google, Meta, and Anthropic, all gunning to attract the best and brightest AI talent in the world. Speeding AI wars raging faster than ever, experts in the field say Shazeer’s move was yet another indication. Shazeer is well known amongst the AI community. In 2000 he joined Google where he contributed significantly to numerous key AI initiatives. He’s also shared a co-authorship of the seminal 2017 research paper, called Attention Is All You Need, where the Transformer architecture was introduced. It’s from that tech that ChatGPT, Gemini and lots of other big language models that we’re using with AI right now to boot.

Shazeer recently left Google in 2021 to co-found the startup, Character.AI, a startup in the field of Chatbot Technology. After capturing the attention of the company, it was soon joining the ranks of the hottest AI startups. The company soon became a talking point and one of the most discussed AI startups. In 2024, Google rehired Shazeer, having hired him at a multi-billion dollar price from Character.AI offered him the opportunity to be appointed a co-lead of the Gemini project, with senior AI leaders Jeff Dean and Oriol Vinyals.

Despite returning to Google less than two years ago, Shazeer has now decided to join OpenAI. In an open posting, he stated that this decision was challenging and thanked the group he collaborated with at Google. OpenAI CEO Sam Altmann also expressed his good will towards the change, claiming he wanted to work with Shazeer for years.

The development is poised to boost OpenAI’s research and product initiatives going forward, particularly given the increasing competition in the AI space. It also poses a new question about Google’s response following the loss of one of the most influential voices in the development of Gemini.

The seasoned researchers will continue to be one of the most valuable assets in the industry as AI companies continue to invest in talent and billions of dollars in technology. As AI venture capital firms invest billions of dollars in technology and people, Shazeer’s departure is proof that seasoned researchers serve as a valuable asset of the company.
