Bengaluru: Ola Electric, one of India’s leading EV players, has received approval for its newly launched Roadster X+(9.1 kWh variant) e-bike from the International Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT), Manesar, a government vehicle testing agency. Following this, the company is now expected to begin deliveries of these bikes, marking a significant milestone for the domestic EV maker.
The bike is powered by Ola’s indigenously developed 4680 Bharat Cell battery pack, developed in-house by Ola’s R&D team. These battery packs are aligned to India’s specific driving conditions, especially in rural and semi-urban areas. The company is also using this technology for its Ola Shakti commercial battery storage solutions, an industry first solution tailored for uninterrupted electricity supply in remote locations.
The Roadster X series of e-bikes remains a natural progression for the Bhavish Aggarwal-led company, who has been in the news lately for the declining performance of the brand, after it reported a 61% decline in e-scooter sales in November this year.
Despite the criticism, Ola Electric has been looking forward to regain its lead in the e-scooter market, with the announcements of an indigenously developed ferrite motor that eliminates the need for rare-earth-based components.
With a 500 km range and advanced features unavailable on ICE-based bikes, the company hopes to boost its market share with this new product. Ola had commenced pre-bookings for the Roadster X bike series in February 2025, with this development giving the company a shot in the arm to meet its delivery timelines.
“The government certification of the Roadster X+ is a major milestone in Ola Electric’s journey towards building end-to-end EV technology in India. With the Roadster X+ (9.1kWh), we are delivering an unmatched range along with superior performance, safety, and reliability, powered entirely by our own cell and battery technology. This is a defining step towards accelerating EV adoption in India’s motorcycle-dominated 2W market.” an Ola spokesperson said in a press release to the bourses.
