Surat: Despite being sold out and almost 2 years after its inauguration by PM Modi, only under 200 of the 4,200 offices are being used. Aimed to offer all kinds of support to Surat’s diamond industry, traders are reluctant to make the shift to the bourse from their traditional bases in Mahidharpura and Mini Bazaar.
Aimed to replicate the success of Mumbai’s Bharat Diamond Bourse, the Surat Diamond Bourse hasn’t seen much interest, mostly due to the decline in demand for mined and lab-grown diamonds.
Now, Majura MLA and Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi has been approached to assist in this regard. On July 27, he held a meeting with diamond traders from Mahidharpura as well as the SDB committee to address their concerns regarding the shift.

All diamond traders have to shift to the SDB and open their offices there, he stated in the meeting. They should complete all the furniture-related work at the SDB by September 26, coinciding with the Aaso Sud Pancham. Once done, the old offices at Mahidharpura need to shut down.
Spread over 67 lakh square feet, the SDB has pipped the US’s Pentagon to become the world’s largest office building. Located in Khajod village, the SDB is 12.5km from the hub of diamond trading at Mahidharpura.
