Microsoft $17.5 billion heavy push to promote AI and cloud future in India

New Delhi: Microsoft has announced it will spend 17.5 billion Indian rupee in India within four years making it one of the best technology announcements of the year. This is the biggest investment that Microsoft has ever had in Asia. The news was announced by the CEO of the company, Satya Nadella, who also visited India during which he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi to talk about the rapidly developing digital and AI requirements in the country.

This massive investment indicates that Microsoft regards India as a very crucial location in the future of artificial intelligence, cloud technology, and digital development. Nadella expressed enthusiasm over the new data-centre capacity under construction in India and he thinks that it will enable the nation to embrace AI at a population-level.

What Microsoft is Planning to develop in India

The key component of the investment will be the construction of new data centres and the expansion of the existing ones. Microsoft is also setting up a new data-centre region that is currently under construction in Hyderabad, described by the company as nearly as large as two large cricket stadiums. This centre shall commence operation by the mid-2026. Together with this, Microsoft will also renovate its existing data centres in such cities as Pune, Chennai and Hyderabad.

Such data centres will deal with cloud storage, training of AI models, cybersecurity, and numerous other services related to digital. This will serve all the mobile apps and government services to business operations. India will be able to rely on cloud and AI infrastructure which will make digital services quicker and more reliable.

Microsoft has indicated that it is not only the big companies or IT sector that can invest in this. The intention is to ensure that AI tools are accessible and helpful to the ordinary people across India.

A big project is to apply AI to reinforce platforms of the government such as e- Shram and the National Career Service. These platforms already expose the crores of workers to jobs. The AI would provide smarter job matching, automatic resume generation, career recommendations as well as assistance in most Indian languages. This would serve over 300 million workers, particularly, the informal and the lower-income group.

The strategy of Microsoft is also to train people in order to comprehend and apply AI. The company has made a goal to train 20 million Indians by the year 2030. More than 5 million have already received training on AI and digital skills, which started the year 2025. A great number of these individuals have been employed, and some have opened small business with their new skills.

The training will embrace students, youths in smaller cities, working professionals, and even the small enterprise owners. This is aimed at ensuring that AI skills are as widespread as the knowledge of a computer.

In this investment, Microsoft feels that India is also getting into a new age of technology. India has so far been associated with online payment and other digital services like Adhaar and high-speed 4G/5G networks. However, currently, the nation is moving towards the large-scale adoption of AI.
