Markets react to the copper rush: Hindustan Copper shares rise 45% this month

Mumbai: The surging demand for copper has helped domestic Copper producer Hindustan Copper Ltd  to rise more than 45% in December, as the surging rally in global copper prices has triggered renewed investor interest in commodity stocks.

Refined copper is critical for the power, infrastructure, EV and increasingly AI-led data center requirements, as surging demand has resulted in the commodity rising almost 40% this year, with prices expected to touch $13,500 soon.

Hindustan Copper is well known as India’s only vertically integrated copper producer, with the PSU responsible for key mining leases and the refining process. The recent rally has driven Hindustan Copper’s shares to rise to their highest levels in 15 years. As India’s sole PSU managing the copper supply chain, Hindustan Copper’s recent rally is being closely watched by the markets.

Hindustan Copper has consistently been a strong pick for sustained gains, as it has developed its mining and processing facilities effectively, despite some price volatility due to market demand and supply fluctuations. This year, the company has reported stronger revenue and profit growth, largely on the back of sustained demand for copper.

In fact, the wider Nifty Metals Index, which contains top commodity stocks, has risen by 4% this December. So far, surging demand for metals has resulted in the Nifty Metal index outperforming the Nifty 50, surging 26% this year. Along with copper, increasing demand for silver, zinc and aluminium has helped the index move forward, with the trend expected to continue in 2026 as well.

Given the strong demand, Gautam Adani and Anil Agarwal’s Vedanta are planning to expand their capacities, with Adani Enterprises aiming to secure ore supplies from Australia for its Kutch copper smelter while Vedanta is expanding its global copper production to meet demand.
