Made-in-India Airbus C-295 achieves major milestone with Maiden test flight

New Delhi: India has taken another big step in the field of defense and the aviation industry by successfully conducting the maiden test flight of the Made in India Airbus C-295 military transport aircraft at Vadodara, Gujarat. The flight is a significant milestone in the project of ‘Make in India’ and to boost indigenous defense production in the country.

The development of the aircraft is currently ongoing in the Vadodara facility in India, at the Final Assembly Line (FAL), at Airbus and Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL). This test flight is an important step in the aircraft’s post production-testing and helps ensure that the aircraft is prepared for further testing.

The first flight is a major milestone for the Indian aviation industry and the ability of the Indian defense industry to produce aircraft, says Airbus Defense. The flight marks significant progress in the project C-295 and is India’s further demonstrating capability to design and manufacture sophisticated military aircraft locally, the company said.

India is getting its first of a production of 40 C-295 aircraft, with the other planes to be produced under a larger deal with Airbus. The agreement calls for the provisioning of 56 planes to the Indian Air Force (IAF). 40 aircraft are being manufactured in India, with the rest being made in Spain.

The C-295 program is especially important because it is the first time a military aircraft is being manufactured in India by a private-sector company. It is hoped that this will result in greater local manufacturing, employment generation, building of an Indian supply chain, and also upgrading India with cutting-edge technologies in the field of Aerospace.

A light aircraft that can perform a wide range of roles, including transport, cargo, medivac, and special operations, the C-295 is capable of these multiple missions. It is expected that it will replace the aging Avro aircraft that the Indian Air Force currently operates, making it more capable.

The successful test flight suggests that India is making strides towards defense manufacturing, says industry sources. The delivery of the first aircraft of the Made-in-India C-295 is another significant achievement for the Indian aerospace industry later this year.
