New Delhi (India), February 23: Dr Suresh Kumar Agarwal, Founder-Director of the International Institute of Lifestyle Medicine, Kolkata, has said in an interview that the diseases like diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases and stroke, oral, breast and cervical cancers, obesity, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, osteoporosis, skin diseases such as Psoriasis, Eczema etc. has increased dramatically in last couple of decades. These diseases are also known as non-communicable diseases or Lifestyle diseases. These ailments are mainly caused by our improper daily habits such as lack of physical activity, unhealthy eating, use of alcohol, smoking tobacco, pollution, substance use disorders, stress, sleep deprivation, sedentary lifestyle and so on.
More than 60% of Indians die because of such Lifestyle diseases, however incorporating certain evidence-based scientific interventions with respect to a healthy diet, physical activity, sleep hygiene, stress management, positive attitude, meaningful social connections, avoidance of smoking, alcohol and other risky substances can prevent as well as manage in a better way to these lifestyle disorders and in certain cases can be reversed as well with consistency.
