JioPC: Reliance Jio Turns TV Screens into Virtual Desktops for Just ₹400 a Month

New Delhi: Reliance Jio has formally launched JioPC, a cloud-based virtual desktop offering that converts any normal screen into a fully-fledged computer, for a mere ₹400 a month. Only JioFiber and Jio AirFiber users will have access to the platform, which is aimed at making computing more cost-effective and accessible across Indian homes.

JioPC is not a desktop computer. Rather, it streams computing resource from the cloud onto a television or monitor through the Jio Set-Top Box. The premise is straightforward: with little configuration, a screen with an HDMI input, a keyboard, and mouse, users have access to an entire desktop experience without shelling out thousands for a traditional PC or laptop.

India boasts more than 70% penetration of TV but under 15% home computer access. Affordability is the biggest hurdle for millions of students, small business people, and home workers. JioPC tackles this head-on by doing away with cumbersome hardware and initial costs.

The service provides a plug-and-play solution immediately. Customers simply need to launch the JioPC application from the Jio Set-Top Box, log in with their registered mobile number, and start working in an Ubuntu-based desktop environment within minutes.

Key Features of the JioPC Platform

As per Jio, the setup of JioPC provides performance comparable to a computer costing approximately ₹50,000. It provides:

  • A complete Ubuntu-based PC experience
  • Browser-based access to Microsoft Office applications
  • LibreOffice for offline documentation
  • Adobe Express and other productivity suites
  • 100GB to 512GB of cloud storage, depending on the plan
  • Integrated antivirus and malware protection
  • AI-prepared tools for content creation and automation
  • Automatic updates and rapid boot-up with no manual upkeep

One of the biggest strengths of the platform is scalability. Users can select plans that provide enhanced performance, based on their requirements.

Subscription Plans and Pricing

JioPC begins at ₹400 per month, with a free trial for new users. There are also higher-plans with greater validity periods and more cloud storage. Notably, there are unlimited usage plans in all of them, with steady performance expectations, such as up to 8GB of virtual RAM.

Target Audience?

JioPC is designed for people who use a screen but not a computer. These include:

  • Students pursuing online classes or doing assignments
  • Freelancers and remote workers using office and creative tools
  • Small business owners managing basic operations like billing or inventory
  • Families seeking a shared computer experience without high costs

This is a particularly timely move as India continues to push for digital inclusion. JioPC may help democratize access to digital tools by offering a low-cost, high-efficiency alternative to traditional computing.

Limitations and Availability:

While the offering is innovative, JioPC currently has some limitations:

  • It does not have support for external devices such as webcams or printers
  • It needs a consistent JioFiber or Jio AirFiber internet connection
  • The facility is not extended to non-Jio internet users
  • Offline access is not supported, as everything is cloud-based

Under these limitations, the idea brings hope to millions of families who would otherwise be cut off from regular computing.
