New Delhi: Reliance Jio is reportedly gearing up to introduce a new low-priced 5G smartphone to bridge the digital divide by helping rural and small-town users transition to faster internet. It believes that people want to use 5G, but cannot afford expensive phones. By introducing an affordable model, Jio aims at expanding its user base and increasing digital access across the country.
According to reports, this new Jio phone is going to feature a big screen, long battery backup, and support for all major apps. Its operation will be simple, best for students, farmers, and first-time smartphone users. Special 5G plans at reportedly low prices are likely to be offered by Jio to make it more irresistible.
India has millions of people living in rural areas where 5G is still new. Many users are still dependent on older 4G phones, since 5G models tend to have a higher starting price. Jio wants to change this by launching a phone that almost anyone is able to afford. The company has done something similar earlier with the JioPhone and JioPhone Next, which helped many people use the internet for the first time.
This move, according to experts, will raise the level of competition in the budget smartphone market. Already, several brands like Xiaomi, Realme, and Samsung offer low-cost phones, but what Jio is offering is different. Jio combines a phone, network, and special plans together into one package, making the overall cost cheaper.
The new phone could also give people better access to government services, online education, and digital healthcare. In many villages, slow internet makes life difficult for students who have to attend online classes. An inexpensive 5G phone could improve learning and communication in such families.
While Jio has not announced an official launch date, sources close to the matter said that it could arrive early next year. If successful, this phone may change how fast India is adopting 5G technology.
