Jalgaon: Agritech major and micro irrigation pioneer Jain Irrigation Systems Limited (JISL) has successfully commissioned its state-of-the-art Biochar production facility in Jalgaon, Maharashtra, to convert agricultural crop residue into organic fertilizers. The newly commissioned facility can process 20,000 tonnes per annum, making it the world’s largest single-unit biochar facility, with further units under development.
The Ecological Benefits
The plant utilizes advanced, modern carbon capture and recycling workflows to deliver significant ecological benefits:
- High-Capacity Pyrolysis: A massive single-stream reactor will treat local crop residues under high-temperature, oxygen-deprived conditions.
- Turning Waste into Wealth: The process will convert bulky agricultural waste such as cotton stalks, soybean trash, and orchard prunings into Biochar to be used as a fertilizer.
- A Long-Term Carbon Sink: Unlike crop burning which releases greenhouse gases, this reactor locks carbon into a solid form for hundreds of years, serving as a highly effective localized carbon sink.
This facility aims to create a commercial market for crop residue, offering a profitable alternative to stubble burning and to help mitigate seasonal air pollution. This remains a strong example for the country, which regularly witnesses seasonal air pollution challenges across vast agricultural belts across the country.
“This is a proud and important milestone for us. At Jain Irrigation, ‘Creating shared value’ has always been at the heart of everything we do. This project goes beyond technology; it is about reimagining the agriculture value chain. By turning agricultural residue into a valuable resource, we are creating a circular system that benefits the farmer and all other stakeholders.” Mr. Anil Jain, Managing Director, Jain Irrigation Systems Ltd said in a press release.
