New Delhi: Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL), India’s leading city gas distribution company, and renewable energy company ACME Group have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to explore potential business opportunities in green hydrogen. The companies aim to jointly promote the adoption of green hydrogen and create demand for it in the country, as well as set up hydrogen generation plants and electrolysers to blend green hydrogen in IGL’s existing pipeline networks supplying gas to households, industrial and commercial set-ups, and compressed natural gas (CNG) for vehicles.

According to Sanjay Kumar, Managing Director of IGL, the company wants to explore the potential of green hydrogen in the automobile sector. IGL had previously collaborated with Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) on a Hydrogen Enriched Compressed Natural Gas (H-CNG) pilot project in Delhi. He also added that the production of green ammonia from green hydrogen has the potential to be another business vertical for IGL.

The MoU was signed between Ashwani Dudeja, President and Director – Green Hydrogen and Ammonia at ACME, and Sanjeev Kumar Bhatia, Vice-President – Business Development and Gas Sourcing at IGL, in the presence of senior officials from both companies. Pawan Kumar, Director (Commercial) at IGL, stated that the city gas distributor is continuously diversifying its business in line with the company’s vision.

Green hydrogen has gained significant attention in India, as the country looks to reduce its carbon footprint and increase its use of clean energy sources. Recently, the Indian government announced its plan to develop a National Hydrogen Energy Mission, aiming to accelerate the adoption of green hydrogen in the country. The mission seeks to create a hydrogen-based economy, foster innovation, develop a regulatory framework, and create a roadmap for research and development in the sector. The collaboration between IGL and ACME is expected to contribute towards these goals and drive the growth of green hydrogen in India.
