New Delhi: India’s biggest airline, IndiGo, is all set to make history by becoming the first to start commercial flights from the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). This brand-new airport is owned by the Adani Group, and IndiGo will launch with 18 daily flights connecting over 15 cities across India.
But that’s just the beginning. IndiGo has big plans for NMIA. By November 2025, it wants to fly 79 times daily from the airport, including 14 international flights. And by November 2026, the number will go up to 140 flights every day, with 30 going abroad.
This partnership between IndiGo and the Adani Group is being called a major step for Indian aviation. Both companies said in a joint statement that the move will boost the growth of the sector and help India become the world’s third-largest aviation market by 2030.
Pieter Elbers, CEO of IndiGo, said he’s excited that IndiGo will be the first airline to fly from NMIA. He added that the new routes will offer travelers affordable, on-time, and hassle-free services, something IndiGo is known for. He also said this move shows the airline’s commitment to improving connectivity across India and beyond.
Arun Bansal, CEO of Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL), said the partnership with IndiGo is a key milestone for NMIA. He believes this will turn NMIA into a major transfer hub for both domestic and international travelers. Bansal added that this effort will give travelers more options and better convenience.
The Navi Mumbai International Airport is being built as a world-class facility. In its first phase, it will be able to handle 20 million passengers and 0.5 million tonnes of cargo every year. In future phases, the aim is to grow that to 90 million passengers and 3.2 million tonnes of cargo.
The airport covers 1,160 hectares and will work alongside Mumbai’s current airport to reduce congestion. NMIA will have two parallel runways, and one of them is 3,700 metres long, making it ready for big international aircraft.
The Adani Group started its journey in the airport business by winning the bids to run six major airports in India, including Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Mangaluru, Jaipur, Guwahati, and Thiruvananthapuram. Through its company Adani Airport Holdings Limited, it also operates the Mumbai airport.
