India’s Billionaire Giants Step Up Investments as Adani, Ambani and Birla Target Future-Ready Businesses

New Delhi: India’s biggest business groups are increasing investments in renewable energy, digital infrastructure, Artificial Intelligence, manufacturing and consumer businesses as Gautam Adani, Mukesh Ambani and Kumar Mangalam Birla prepare their companies for the next phase of economic growth.

For decades, India’s largest conglomerates built their strength in traditional sectors such as energy, infrastructure, manufacturing, metals and telecommunications. Today, they are expanding into industries expected to play a major role in the country’s future, including clean energy, data centres, advanced technology and modern consumer services.

The Adani Group is increasing its focus on infrastructure and future-ready technology. In early 2026, the group announced a proposed investment plan of around $66 billion in Maharashtra. The plan covers areas such as aviation, clean energy, urban infrastructure, digital platforms and advanced manufacturing.

The group is also exploring AI-ready data centres and digital infrastructure. Data centres are becoming increasingly important as businesses adopt cloud computing, artificial intelligence and digital services. However, these facilities require large amounts of electricity, creating a strong connection between digital expansion and renewable-energy investment.

Reliance Industries, led by Mukesh Ambani, is following a similar strategy by combining telecommunications, retail, technology and clean energy. Jio has created one of India’s largest digital networks, while Reliance Retail has expanded across grocery, fashion, electronics and consumer products.

Reliance is also investing in solar energy, batteries, green hydrogen and energy-storage systems. The company’s strategy is to build new businesses while using the financial strength of its traditional oil and petrochemical operations.

Kumar Mangalam Birla’s Aditya Birla Group is expanding across construction materials, renewable energy, financial services and digital business platforms. The group has entered the paints market through Birla Opus and launched Birla Pivot to improve business-to-business purchasing in the construction sector.

The three groups are investing in different sectors, but their strategies have several common themes. Each is increasing investment in technology, energy security, infrastructure and consumer demand.
