Hyped businesses are not always worth it. Even ‘boring’ businesses offer unprecedented scope

The opportunity to earn a living motivates people to pursue various professions. Many aspire for a glamorous profession, while others may seem boring and uninspiring, and are ignored. Your uncle’s restaurant business may be earning him far less than what you think, yet the chaiwala outside your office could be out-earning your monthly paycheck! Many don’t believe such simple jobs can earn you that much, but you’ll be surprised how well they can help you get a consistent income.

A recently viral Reddit thread named- “ What boring business would you start today” discusses such opportunities in detail, where people discuss business ideas that no one cared about, yet get an opportunity to earn pretty well.

What “boring” business would you start today?

“I’ve been renovating our home as well as a commercial building and have been using a local family owned junk hauling company. The money they make is crazy.

Husband and wife work together, drive a full size truck with a nice dump trailer. A full load is $750 and they load it for you. They told me they average 4 loads per day in the peak season and about 2-3 in the off-season, and each load costs them about $125 to dump, plus fuel and misc expenses. Simple website, text when you have a pickup, pay via Venmo.

It would be a physically tough (and likely nasty) business to be in, but apparently if you can deal with that you’ll be rewarded”

Another user, djyosco explained how his cleaning business gives him a 40% margin:

“I started a residential cleaning business. Very boring. And people say over saturated. But realistically you only need to service 200 homes twice a month to have a million dollar business and it runs at a 40% profit margin. I don’t do any cleaning.

We pay our cleaners like mechanics get paid. So if we know a house takes 4 hrs to clean with 2 people, our cleaners will get 4 hrs. If they get it done in 2, they still get the 4. Then they book more. They benefit because in 8 hrs they can book 12 hrs. We benefit because we get 12 hrs of work from them. Charging is simple. Cost of labor and materials. Then multiply it by 1.5. That’s what we charge. The 10% covers overhead.

So my billable rate is $85 an hr for 2 cleaners typically. My cleaners get 20 for cleaners, 25 for leads. Leads get a car. All leads are past cleaners so everyone moves up as we grow. When a new team needs to get started, we hire 2 cleaners and bump a current cleaner to a lead and give them a car” he says as he’s been doing this for the past 15 years, without any issues till now”

As the discussion moved on, another user explained how boring businesses like car washing, storage units and junk hauling are pretty ‘boring’ but offer a consistent yet reliable source of income for those who have no qualms of taking it.

For those who’d like to showcase their skills, another user explains how you can monetize this income.

“If you have special skills, you can monetize them with online classes, you can start a faceless YT channel (yes it still works like a charm in 2025), start a newsletter, sell services in booming niches such as AI, utilize affiliate marketing and combine it with other business models”

Many of these people run successful businesses even as they would love to help people do so. As automation has started to threaten jobs that were earlier considered safe and lucrative, many are going online to understand how to boost their incomes easily without worrying about large investments.
