How Indian sneaker brand Gully Labs is competing with imported brands: Explained

New Delhi: Over the years, Nike and Adidas have dominated the sneaker market in India. Their logos took over malls, their designs influenced fads, and to the majority of consumers, high quality sneakers were imported brands. However, there is a fledgling local brand which is starting to change that attitude and doing it in the manner that those international competitors never had the opportunity to do.

Gully Labs did not start with huge plants or famous endorsers. It began with a concept the one that founders Arjun Singh and Animesh Mishra felt India had long been lacking over the years. As global sneaker brands narrated stories based on the Western street culture, India lacked a solid identity in the arena. That was their chance.

Gully Labs was founded in New Delhi in 2023 with the focus of creating something different from other global sneaker brands. This brand has tapped into the Indian culture, art, and street life, rather than of imitating the global movements. Their sneakers did not simply seek to appear good, but something that one knows. Designs started to be based on local concepts such as the use of traditional embroidery, local festivals and street inspired designs that appeal to the young Indian customers.

Such a strategy soon provided the brand with a competitive advantage. Although imported sneakers are usually aspirational but far off, Gully Labs is personal. It speaks a language its audience knows, and that bond is gaining momentum particularly among Gen Z consumers who are seeking identity and authenticity in their clothes.

Investor confidence has also contributed to the rise of the company. Gully Labs started small but after that, it increased the amount of early-stage funding that allowed it to grow its operations and expand into more places. It was able to raise seed funding in a short period after which it proceeded to a bigger Series A round, that saw it raise tens of crores to fund its growth. It is now using the capital to enhance production, establish retail stores and even venture into international markets such as the US and the UK.

Gully Labs is competing intelligently and in a narrow manner despite its small size in relation to the global giants. It is not attempting to outdo brands such as Nike or Adidas in quantity or worldwide scale. Rather, it is dissecting a niche that those companies are having difficulties with local storytelling. Its direct-to-consumer model enables it to have control over branding and customer experience, and its curated and design-oriented collections provide an exclusivity feeling.

Simultaneously, the wider market is shifting towards its favor. There is a slow shift amongst Indian consumers towards home grown brands, not only due to affordability but also originality. The sneaker culture in India is changing and customers are not happy with using the same international designs that they can see everywhere. They desire something that they can identify with and that is where Gully Laboratories comes in.

The trip has not been smooth either. The brand has experienced some setbacks in its operations just like most startups that grow at a high rate and even internally. Increasing production, keeping the quality and providing the customer with the same experience is a continuing test- especially when competing with companies that have decades of experience and huge infrastructure.

Nevertheless, Gully Labs is driving on with strong purpose. The firm is planning to achieve huge revenue levels and to develop a brand that can be recognized not only in India but around the world. Its bigger objective is not to be regarded as an alternative to imported sneakers, but a luxury label of its own.

The beauty of its story is that it is not attempting to copy-cat the world success but to give it Indian twist. Gully Labs is showing that a local brand can be as strong as a global brand in a market that has long been dominated by international brands. And that is precisely the reason why it is starting to provide some real competition to imported sneaker brands.
