GMR plans $2 billion expansion at Delhi and Hyderabad Airports

New Delhi: GMR Airports Ltd. is planning to invest up to ₹19,400 crore (around $2 billion) to expand and modernise its airports in New Delhi and Hyderabad. This investment will take place in the next five-to-seven years in the backdrop of India’s strong aviation growth.

The company will invest approximately ₹13,800 crore in the Airport in Hyderabad, Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, and up to ₹5,600 crore in Airport in New Delhi. The funds will be used to expand the airport’s capacity for carrying passengers and make it more suitable for the growing volume of air traffic.

Hyderabad Airport to get major upgrade

The substantial investment would going to be allocated to Hyderabad. Once the expansion is completed, the airport could going to handle around 80 million passengers every year. Currently, it moves approximately 34 million passengers a year and it going to be big expansion.

The expansion of the airport’s capacity could more than double which would aid in handling the increasing need of passengers and airlines at the airport. The project is also anticipated to enhance the whole aviation industry infrastructure and services at the airport.

Delhi Airport expansion

GMR also is all set to put up an investment of up to ₹5,600 crore in the airport in New Delhi. The investment is going to be on enhancing capacity and modernisation of one of the most busy airports in India.

India’s aviation sector is boasting strong growth, with the expansion plans coming in. India is already the third largest domestic market for aviation, after the United States and China. The government expects the number of passengers to increase to approximately 1.1 billion in the next 14 years.

GMR focuses on airport business

As one of the largest airport operators in India GMR Airports is a direct competitor of the Adani Group’s airport business. The company is currently running six airports in India and airports and projects in other countries.

The Delhi and Hyderabad projects may be just the start of a series of airport modernization projects that GMR hopes to launch, the company said in the statement. The company is also in talks to make investments in Nagpur Airport that it acquired in June 2026.

GMR is not considering a foray into the airline industry as some possible industry options go. The company intends to stay on the airport business and related segments like aircraft maintenance and real estate development.

The $2 billion investment is part of GMR’s confidence in the aviation industry in India, as well as the need for improved airport infrastructure.
