New Delhi: The $1 million payout by JPMorgan Chase to settle serious accusations before they went public are the big news. The case is now a high-profile lawsuit alleging sexual assault, workplace harassment, racial discrimination, and retaliation.
Chirayu Rana, a former investment banker at JPMorgan has sued the bank and senior executive Lorna Hajdini in a New York court of law, according to reports from a number of international media outlets. Rana alleged sexual assault, harassment and threats in the leveraged finance division of the company. He further alleged that there was racial discrimination associated with his Nepalese background in his colleagues.
The row escalated even further after it was revealed that JPMorgan had tried to settle the issue privately months before the case entered the public arena. According to reports, the bank had been willing to offer Rana $1 million in March 2026 after conducting some mediation between the two parties. But talks broke down due to the fact that the settlement talks were reported to have been wanting a much higher sum from the hands of Rana. His legal team later requested almost $11.75 million, according to some reports, and more than that before that, according to others.
In 2024, Rana joined the firm JPMorgan, and made an internal grievance in 2025. Shortly thereafter, he was put on paid leave by the company. According to his complaint, harassers subjected him to harassment for months, including harassment and intimidation in the workplace. His concern within the company was also found to have impacted his career prospects, the grievance said.
JPMorgan has vehemently rejected the charges. The bank said that it carried out an internal investigation, which involved reviewing email correspondence, phone logs and conversations with employees. The investigation revealed no evidence to substantiate Rana’s claims, the company said. In addition, JPMorgan said it had the “strong impression” that Rana did not “fully cooperate” with the internal review process.
Lorna Hajdini has denied all the charges brought against her as well. Her lawyer said the allegations are “entirely baseless” and that she and the man were never involved in any sexual or romantic relationship. She’s also been sued by her lawyers for harming her reputation with public allegations and media coverage that Rana did.
When the details of the lawsuit emerged online, it was quickly picked up by social media. The discussion threads and clips about the allegations edited by AI became viral, sparking public debate. The lawsuit was also featured in several podcasts, and was the subject of social media posts and discussion by several commentators and bloggers.
In the latest development, Rana has just recently brought on lawyer Daniel Kaiser, who has a reputation for litigating on behalf of some of the accusers of Jeffrey Epstein’s case. His lawyers state they have evidence and testimony related to the charges. The suit was also said to have been filed with more witness affidavits and medical allegations of emotional trauma.
Meanwhile, several news reports have cast doubt on some of the allegations in the lawsuit. Some news outlets had mixed messages and mishmashes regarding the case. In other reports, investigators said they previously hadn’t uncovered criminal evidence that backs up the accusations. In spite of that, the civil suit is still ongoing and both parties are adamant about their stance.
The legal battle is now attracting more attention because one of the world’s biggest banks is involved and other allegations in the case are highly sensitive, related to workplace conduct. The case has also sparked concerns about how companies respond to complaints of harassment, their internal investigation processes, and confidential settlements before a lawsuit is filed. More information will be made public in coming weeks as the case drags on.
