New Delhi: We all know Costco as a warehouse store in the US where people buy groceries and daily items in bulk. But now, it’s becoming famous for something else, gold bars. Yes, you heard that right. People are actually buying gold bars from Costco, and some are even making profits by selling them later.
This trend went viral after a finance content creator named Humphrey Yang shared his story on TikTok. In April 2024, he bought a PAMP Suisse gold bar from Costco for $2,359. He recorded everything and posted it online, and his video got over 6.5 million views!
Almost a year later, in March, he sold the gold bar to a shop called Witter Coin in San Francisco. The store was paying $2,955.42 per ounce, which was just a bit less than the market price of gold at that time (around $3,000 per ounce). That’s pretty good because gold dealers usually offer a bit less than the current market price.
Yang was paid in cash, and guess what? He made a neat profit of $595.43 in 11 months, he said the whole process was “surprisingly easy.” But not everyone agreed with him. Some people in the comments said he sold too early. One even wrote, “Price is gonna end at $4k or something. Don’t sell yet”
And they might be right. After Yang sold his gold, the price kept rising. By May 2025, gold had reached around $3,300 per ounce. Big banks like Goldman Sachs even changed their year-end prediction from $3,000 to $3,700! The reason? Many people are worried about the economy. President Trump’s new tariffs made people think a recession might come, so investors are rushing to buy gold to protect their money.
In fact, in February, some of the biggest banks in the US and UK started flying gold bars from London to New York on commercial flights just to keep them safe from inflation!
Even The Sun wrote about how Costco’s gold bars are blowing up on TikTok. Many users shared how they bought gold from Costco, and some said the bars sell out within hours once they’re listed online.
This whole gold-buying trend shows how times are changing. Before, in India and other countries, people mostly bought gold for weddings or festivals. But now, more people are buying it to protect their savings because they’re scared of rising prices and unstable markets.
Still, experts say buying gold has its risks. The price can go up and down anytime, and you might miss out on bigger profits if you sell too early, just like what may have happened with Yang. But his story proves that even a normal shopping trip to Costco can turn into a smart investment.
