New Delhi: The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has convened an important meeting to discuss reforms in India’s Special Economic Zone (SEZ) framework. The objective is to simplify business rules, reduce compliance requirements, and make SEZs more attractive for domestic and global investors.
India currently has more than 270 operational SEZs, contributing significantly to exports, employment, and manufacturing growth. Officials are reviewing existing regulations to improve ease of doing business and align SEZ policies with changing global trade patterns.
The proposed reforms may include easier approval processes, greater flexibility in land use, and simplified operational guidelines for businesses. Industry representatives have long demanded policy changes to help SEZs remain globally competitive amid shifting supply chains.
Experts believe modernising SEZ regulations can encourage fresh investments in electronics, pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, textiles, and advanced manufacturing. Stronger SEZ policies are also expected to support India’s ambition of becoming a major global manufacturing and export hub while creating new employment opportunities.
