New Delhi: A leading Indian tech startup, valued at over a billion dollars, has found itself embroiled in one of the biggest controversies after allegations surfaced that it had inflated its user numbers. The company, known for its fast growth and strong investor support, now faces serious questions over how many real users actually exist on its platform.
It started when an external audit team began examining the company’s dashboard, where unusual patterns popped out. Some user accounts seemed to be inactive for several years, while others bore repetitive names and similar email formats, and they were using it in exactly the same way. This smelled of thousands, or even millions, of accounts being fake or artificially created.
Startups often flaunt high user numbers just to attract new investors. Large user bases give the impression that the product is widely accepted and growing fast. But if the numbers are not real, investors end up putting money into a company which is not that strong as it appears.
Once the news became public, doubts over the valuation of the startup immediately set in. Several investors reportedly sought deeper investigation into the matter. A few employees also claimed on social media that they were made to project unrealistic targets, which forced teams to create artificial growth charts.
Analysts in the industry say that this case will set off more audits for other startups. India’s technology ecosystem relies a great deal on trust, and incidents like these can impinge on the credibility of the whole sector. Where companies don’t report honest numbers, it becomes difficult for investors to decide where they should put their money.
The company’s founder released a statement saying the issue is under review and that investigators will have the company’s complete cooperation. But to critics, it may be only the tip of the iceberg.
