Air India may introduce no-meal tickets on domestic flights: What it means for passengers

New Delhi: Air India is evaluating to launch a new and distinct domestic carrier fare option to fly without free meals to cut down costs. The plan comes amid the airline’s initiative to cut several costs and provide more flexibility to passengers in purchasing their tickets.

As per reports, the Tata Group firm’s airline is looking into introducing a “no-meal” fare category option on certain domestic routes. Under this idea, if a passenger did not want to eat on board while on his journey, he would be able to get a cheaper ticket. Customers may reserve a standard meal and/or drink options, or they can select a meal on their own.

The decision follows a similar trend by rivals around the world as they seek to maintain their ticket charge levels while on the back foot with costs. Operational costs such as fuel, airport costs, maintenance, and other costs have escalated considerably in recent years, which has led to a strain on the airline’s profit margins.

The new fare option could have an impact on passengers traveling on shorter domestic routes, where food is seen as a luxury, if it is introduced. Travelers are often willing to pay less for a ticket to help afford the trip, particularly those who opt to fly on a budget. They have the opportunity to save realistically if they avoid some meals.

The plan is considered to be a reflection of a trend which experts in the aviation industry call “unbundling.” This model will enable airlines to split up services that had always been bundled into one fare and give passengers the choice of which services to use. Low-cost airlines are already opting for a system in which theme visitors are charged for extra baggage, food, seat selection, and priority boarding.

The most important benefit for the riders would be reduced ticket prices. Passengers who typically bring their own food, or are on short international flights of less than 2 hours, might think this is worth considering. It could also provide greater flexibility, allowing customers to customize their travel experience based on their preferences and budget.

But some ride passengers might have questions. Many travelers consider free meals to be a significant aspect of the whole airline service experience. Traditionally, Air India has been viewed as a full-service air carrier, providing onboard amenities like meals and other services that are included in the fare. Some fare categories may see mixed reactions from customers as they are used to having complimentary meals on those fares.

Questions remain over how much they would save, too. If the cost of the ticket only drops slightly, some might think that sluggishly sacrificing a free lunch is not worth the hassle. The airline has yet to release any information about the specific rate cut or the services where the new service might be offered.

Although these worries exist, aviation experts feel that this step might prove helpful to make Air India competitive in the nation’s quickly increasing domestic aviation market, and also to attract more price-conscious travelers. Under the Tata Group holding, the airline has been making a major overhaul of its operations, with major investments in fleet expansion, customer service upgrades, and operational efficiencies.

Air India has not officially announced the launch date for the proposed ‘no meal’ category. But if it is rolled out, it will be a big change in the pricing of domestic air travel in India. The passenger would be able to select his/her fare, and the airline will be able to earn more money on reduced service cost and efficiency. The effectiveness of the program will depend on travelers’ perceived value and if Air India can offset its cost savings to meet customer expectations.
