New Delhi: Adani Energy Solutions (AESL) has secured another significant transmission project of ₹4,700 crore in Maharashtra, as India strives for renewable energy. The project will facilitate sourcing up to 4,500 MW renewable and storage power from Karnataka to the lion share of power consuming regions in Maharashtra.

The project, which was awarded under the Tariff Based Competitive Bidding process, will be based on strengthening power transmission network around Satara, Pune and Mumbai Metropolitan Region. It is expected that it will be completed within a period of three and a half years and will bring 562 circuit kilometres of transmission lines and 9,000 MVA of transformation capacity.

Why this project matters for India

India is rapidly increasing its solar, wind and other renewable power capacity. But generating clean electricity is just a part of the problem. That electric has to be delivered to homes, businesses and industries as well. So, as crucial as new renewables, is a more robust transmission network.

This can be addressed through the new Maharashtra project, which aims to establish a better connectivity between the renewable energy generation areas and the areas with high electricity demand. It’s crucial because producers of solar and wind energy do not generate electricity at the same level day after day. Efficient storage will enable renewable energy to be more reliable and reduce the reliance on fossil fuels for electricity generation when demand is high in India.
