Mumbai: Defying the rising preference for OTT, Aditya Dhar’s crime thriller Dhurandhar is on track to surpass Pushpa 2 as the highest-grossing Bollywood film, with ₹831.40 crores collected in 31 days since its release.

The Ranveer Singh- Akshaye Khanna starrer defied expectations, especially as the makers did not promote the film through trailers or other mediums. The film has achieved this despite not being released in the Middle East, one of the major overseas markets for Indian films. In fact, there are reports of Pakistani fans fascinated by the film, even though the film is narrated through the lens of an Indian undercover agent.
Directed by Aditya Dhar, known for his last release Uri: A Surgical Strike, the film proves that strong word-of-mouth can trump aggressive marketing, even if the film is riddled with gory violence.
Such was the popularity that the next release, Ikkis, starring the late Dharmendra Deol, had to be postponed from December 25 to January 1 due to a lack of screens for the film. Despite that, Dhurandhar’s screenings continue to draw packed auditoriums.
Distributed by Jio Studios, Dhurandhar is the first in a two-part movie series, the second of which is expected to hit the screens in March. After Pushpa 2 made ₹1234.1 crore in 2024, Dhurandhar is on track to become the most successful Hindi language film after the pandemic.
