New Delhi (India), January24: Rohan Kailasam’s Wastra paints a rather vivid picture of Mumbai in this thriller of old times Mumbai’s tale. Mumbai’s Colaba is not a mere setting but a poignant character. Mumbai is the sole blood running through the veins of Kailasam’s odyssey. Every line that talks about the idiosyncrasies of Mumbai creates a vivid imagery of Mumbai in its oldest Bombay-esque form. The intense and true-to-reality depiction of Bombay’s underworld.
Rohan grew up closer to the realities of Mumbai and therefore wanted to shed light on the grit behind the glamour of Mumbai’s underworld. The events of Wastra are based on real-life events that shaped the Mumbai underworld then and there is no better way to tell its truth. Although the characters are fearless and stand out, the city, with its grimness, its crime and its history is what you take back after you have put it down.
From the beginning when Shalini starts the investigation and follows the trail to the murky streets of Colaba, and as the story moves forward you are on the trail to find the clues that lead to the final answer and rediscover and get to know the city through the author’s eyes. Wastra’s Shinde is the embodiment of Mumbai in its truest form, with just as many twists as the lanes of Colaba Shinde and Mumbai will keep haunting your mind much after reading. The city’s energy and chaos not only give the book an edge but also give the book its soul which is the highest factor for a crime thriller.
Witness loyalty, betrayal, and the blurred lines between fact and fiction converge to depict the story of Mumbai that is forgotten but not forgiven, in Rohan Kailasam’s Wastra published by Nu Voice Press, an imprint of HubHawks.
