New Delhi: In a boost to the government’s Make In India initiative, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has approved 22 proposals worth ₹ 41,863 crore for manufacturing components. The development, under the Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS), is expected to generate almost 33,791 jobs, according to a press note shared to the media. Mumbai: Two of India’s largest quick-service restaurant (QSR) franchise operators are set to merge, bringing together the franchise rights for more than 3,000 KFC and Pizza Hut restaurants under one entity. Sapphire Foods India Limited (SFIL) will be absorbed into Devyani International Limited (DIL), creating a merged entity that will also oversee KFC and Pizza Hut’s long-term presence in India and in select overseas markets. New Delhi: In a late-night notification before the new year, the Ministry of Finance has announced a significant increase in taxes on tobacco products, making them dearer by 28%. This new duty is expected to be implemented by February 1, in addition to the existing 40% GST already levied. The move forms another push by the government to discourage tobacco consumption, with cigarettes longer than 75mm seeing the most impact. Currently, taxes on cigarettes amount for about 53% of retail prices, well below the World Health Organization’s benchmark of 75% aimed at discouraging consumption.
