New Delhi: Alphabet’s Google on Wednesday has unveiled a new flagship artificial intelligence model, its latest effort to match its competitors, Anthropic and OpenAI.
The model, dubbed Argon, is bigger than Google’s previous line of more sophisticated products, known as Argon ‘Pro’, says a company representative. It is “the most powerful model from Google” for complex workloads and “competitive” with OpenAI’s Astra and Anthropic’s Opus in key coding and cybersecurity metrics, says Google, which touts the newcomer as its best.
Google released the figures which are of mixed-value. The company said in a separate press release it has beaten both Astra and Opus on multiple industry benchmarks, and lagged on others, including two of four coding tests. These are self-reported figures, which are not independently verified.
Google hasn’t specified any date for Argon. For the time being, the company is providing the model to specific cybersecurity partners and participating in the voluntary process initiated by the Trump administration to provide access to the model.
The launch comes on the heels of the company’s troubled history. CEO Sundar Pichai had announced that Gemini 3.5 Pro would be available in June, but Google has now announced that the model won’t be coming any time soon. Google has remodeled its DeepMind AI lab in the interim. This led to the resignation of founder and CEO Demis Hassabis and a few top Gemini talent leaving the company. The lags allowed Anthropic and OpenAI to continue to make strides in the research frontier with new versions of their flagship models.
In July, Pichai rebutted the notion that Google was in decline. Regardless of this, the company recently changed the message from hawking the latest capabilities of the Gemini model, to emphasizing that it is an economical option over its competitors.
Argon is, therefore, a litmus test as to whether or not Google can demonstrate that it can hold its own at the high end of performance, rather than just in price. As it has no release date and a benchmark record of varying strength in various areas, the answer will depend on how it performs when it becomes available to other developers and customers.
