New Delhi: The world’s largest TV manufacturer, Samsung, seems to be reinventing itself. The company has traditionally marketed its QLED and Neo QLED TVs as key products for many years. However, according to a new report, Samsung may cease shipments of the TVs altogether in the near future.
One of the primary reasons for this is the competition from the Chinese brands such as Hisense and TCL televisions. The companies have been selling low-cost TVs mislabelled as “QLED” although many of them have little or no quantum dot material. This has detracted from the Samsung brand (QLED) and it has been difficult for Samsung to compete with price.
A report from Electronic Times states that Samsung has drastically slashed the number of QLED TVs produced in this year. The company is reported to have produced approximately 10 million QLED TVs in 2025, and now only between 2-3 million in 2026. This is a reduction of some 80%.
Samsung has already phased out lower cost QLED TVs. Instead, the company is selling the Mini LED TVs that lack the quantum dot overcoat that produces the rich colors of the QLED screens.
Less and less models each year are being seen even in the high end world of the Samsung’s Neo QLED TVs with quantum dot technology and Mini LED backlight. Samsung, however, has begun rolling out a much newer type of TV screen, called Micro RGB, and has started doing so for its TVs. Samsung is reportedly preparing to offer even fewer Neo QLED options next year, and may drop sales altogether by 2028.
The Samsung approach going forward is straightforward: Mini LED technology with RGB for higher-priced TV sets; Mini LED with TCL for lower-cost sets. OLED TVs are also likely to remain on the market as they provide the most dynamic black levels and are still in demand for those who seek the highest quality pictures when buying TVs.
Though QLED has enabled Samsung to become a TV industry leader for the past decade, the time of this display technology may be coming to an end.
