New Delhi: As recently we have seen in many reports that N. Chandrasekaran is scheduled to retire as the Tata Sons chairman in February 2027, there is once again a discussion regarding who will be the next in line to take control of Tata Group. Of those that are being considered, Noel Tata has shown several promise.
Noel Tata is no stranger to the succession plans of Tata Group. Years ago, when Ratan Tata was retired as the chairman of the company in the year 2012, his name was came in front once again when Cyrus Mistry was moved out in the year 2016. And ultimately, it was N Chandrasekaran who got the job in 2017.
So, why is there still mention of Noel Tata’s name?
A Long Association With the Tata Group
Noel Tata has been with the Tata Group for over four decades. Noel has also been an important part of this group’s operations, serving in significant roles besides his family connection. He became Managing Director of Trent, the Tata Group’s retail company, in 1999. Under his tenure Trent grew in size considerably. It has well-known retail brands like Westside and Zudio.
One of the most important accomplishments that can be attributed to Noel Tata is the growth of Trent. The company became a major organised retail player in India from being a relatively small retail outfit. Zudio, especially, is one of the most popular names in the value-fashion market in India.
Growth at Tata International
Noel Tata was also Managing Director of Tata International since 2010. In his time, the company’s turnover allegedly rose from about $500 million to over $3 billion.
This experience is valuable as Tata International has diverse markets and businesses. It provided Noel with a good working experience of a big and globally integrated organisation. He has also served top job roles at firms like Tata Steel, Tata investment corporation, Titan, and Voltas.
His Biggest Role Today: Tata Trusts
But, since the demise of Ratan Tata in October 2024, Noel Tata has gained significant importance.
Seeking to understand how to leverage the philanthropic arm of the Tata group of companies, Noel Tata has joined as the chairman of Tata Trusts, one of the most significant institutions of the Tata group. Ravi, chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Tata Trusts, is also going to be a member of the Executive Committee of the Tata Trusts.
This generally means Noel has a pivotal role in the group ownership and control. It is for this reason that his name is now frequently being talked about for the next Tata Sons chairman.
As the head of Tata Sons, one of India’s biggest and most trusted conglomerates, the chairman’s watch is concerned with the major enterprises of businesses across various sectors including technology, automobiles, steel, retail, aviation, and consumer goods.
Why Noel Tata Could Be a Natural Choice
Noel Tata is a potential contender for several reasons. First, he knows the Tata Group intimately. He has worked with various organisations of the Tata group for decades and has a good understanding of their culture and working.
Secondly, he has real world experience. He has experience of managing and growing large organizations at Trent and Tata International.
Third, as executive chairman of the Tata Trusts he has a big stake in the group ownership.
Lastly, he has a long track record in the case of Tata succession. Whenever there is a significant change in leadership in the group, his name has been mentioned.
But No Decision Has Been Made
Tata Sons chairman will not be confirmed as Noel Tata, as yet there is much speculation.
The succession process is continuing and there is also a possibility of other senior executives in the Tata Group to be considered. Tata Steel chief T.V. Narendran has been mentioned in the list.
There is a governance issue as well in regards to the potential of his appointment. He would be in charge of Tata Sons should he take over the chairmanship of the group, a stake in controlling both the ownership and management of the group in his hands.
Noel Tata is still among the top players to be trailed in the succession saga. His decades’ years of experience and a stellar record at both Trent and Tata International make him a household name when it comes to who should head the Chandrayaan, albeit for different reasons.
