Chennai: The high-profile divorce case between Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and TVK president C. Joseph Vijay and his wife, Sangeetha Sornalingam, is officially on hold—at least for now. Sangeetha has withdrawn her divorce petition from the Chengalpattu Family Court, which means the proceedings are over for the time being. The court closed the case after Sangeetha appeared via video call on Friday and told Judge D. Sujatha she didn’t want to move forward.
Vijay’s side was notified and asked for a response, but they didn’t raise any objections. So, the court granted Sangeetha’s request and wrapped things up. Still, Sangeetha has the right to file a new petition in the future if she decides to—so this isn’t a final verdict on the couple’s marriage, or on any allegations made.
Sangeetha originally filed the divorce petition back in February. She asked for the marriage to be dissolved under the Special Marriage Act, citing adultery and mental cruelty. She told the court that attempts to patch things up hadn’t worked out, and she also mentioned how important it was to think about their children’s education and emotional health. Her petition used multiple sections of the law to back up her request.
No surprise, the case drew a lot of attention. Vijay is both a popular actor-turned-politician and the current Chief Minister, and his personal life tends to make headlines. As for the details in Sangeetha’s petition, those remain just allegations unless the court hears evidence and makes a ruling—so far, Vijay hasn’t made any public comment about the case.
Over the last few months, the proceedings stopped and started several times. Just last week, Vijay’s lawyer asked for an adjournment because of the Tamil Nadu Assembly session, so the court postponed things without setting a new date.
