IT index rises 16% in July, as investor optimism for AI fades

India’s Nifty IT index has surged by more than 16% in July, its strongest monthly gain in nearly six years, as investors continue to keep faith in the long term services based model perfected by the sector. This rally came despite intermittent profit booking towards the end of the month, with investors increasingly viewing established IT firms as beneficiaries-rather than casualties- of the enterprise AI adoption.

AI fears begin to subside

For much of the last year, Indian IT stocks have remained under pressure amid concerns that advances in generative AI would reduce demand for traditional software development and outsourcing services.

However, recent quarterly earnings and management commentaries from leading IT companies have suggested a different narrative. Rather than replacing conventional IT services, AI is now being seen as an additional revenue opportunity, with clients aiming to integrate AI into existing business processes.

As a result, investors have begun shifting their focus from fears of disruption to the sector’s ability to monetise AI-led digital transformation projects.

Conventional IT services remain resilient

Despite rapid advances in AI technologies, India’s leading software exporters continue to rely on their strengths in long term managed services like cloud migration, digital consulting, cybersecurity and application maintenance contracts. These services offer high client stickiness and strong cash flows, making them highly resiliant despite the dynamic nature of technology.

Valuations attract investors

Investors have found the valuations of leading IT companies- TCS, Infosys, HCLTech and Wipro- highly attractive following their period of broad underperformance in the sector.

Additionally, expectations of easing global interest rates could encourage higher enterprise technology investments, particularly in North America, which remains the largest market for Indian IT companies.
