On Friday in Shanghai, Chinese AI startup Moonshot pulled back the curtain on Kimi K3, calling it the world’s largest open-weight AI model. President Xi Jinping used the same day—at a big tech conference in Shanghai—to double down on China’s push to lead in artificial intelligence.

The announcement sent shockwaves through the market. Investors bailed on Chinese tech and AI stocks, spooked that Kimi K3’s sheer size, open-access approach, and aggressive pricing might set off an even fiercer global race in generative AI.

So, what’s Kimi K3? Moonshot says it’s a massive 2.8 trillion-parameter large language model built for some heavy lifting—complex reasoning, software development, and long tasks that trip up smaller models. According to Moonshot, Kimi K3 nearly matches Anthropic’s Fable in performance and outperformed OpenAI’s GPT 5.6 Sol and Opus 4.8 in several internal tests.

It also comes with a massive context window—up to a million tokens—so it can chew through long documents, keep conversations going, and knock out multi-step coding projects. The company says it topped Arena.ai’s tests for frontend code generation.

Of course, all these claims are just that for now. People are waiting for independent researchers to dig in, once the community gets hands-on access.

Moonshot plans to open up the model’s weights by July 27, letting outside developers and organizations poke around inside, tweak it, and run it themselves.

On pricing, Moonshot came out swinging: $3 for every million input tokens, $15 for output. That puts Kimi K3 below a lot of big-name commercial AI services. Not everyone’s happy about this—some worry established companies now face pricing pressure for enterprise contracts and subscription revenues.

The market didn’t take it well. Hong Kong stocks for Chinese AI companies, like Zhipu AI, dropped hard—Zhipu fell over 20% in one day, and MiniMax plus others saw double-digit slumps.

Analysts couldn’t help but remember what happened earlier when DeepSeek launched its open model in 2026—similar panic in the markets. It kicked up the debate: Can Chinese firms really build AI that rivals the West, but at a fraction of the cost?

Backing for Moonshot comes from some heavyweights, including Alibaba and Tencent. The startup is also on the hunt for around $2 billion in new funding, reportedly aiming for a $30 billion valuation before a possible Hong Kong IPO.

The timing wasn’t a coincidence. Xi gave his first keynote at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference since it started in 2018, spelling out China’s vision for AI. The conference’s theme—“Intelligent Partners, Co-create the Future”—sums up Beijing’s goal to put AI at the center of economic growth.

China’s government has also spotlighted AI in its 2026 work report, calling it a keystone in what they’re calling a new intelligent economy.

People in the industry see Moonshot’s announcement as more than just a tech launch; it’s politically loaded. With government support, big investors, and China’s focus on fast technical progress, it’s clear Beijing wants to speed up homegrown AI development and roll it out across industries.

Open-weight systems let universities, startups, and enterprises build and run their own apps, not just rely on closed platforms from major companies. That could spread China’s influence in the global AI world.

Of course, this approach brings its own headaches—model safety, preventing misuse, and fears of AI becoming just another commodity. Regulators and tech firms are still fighting over how open models should be evaluated and controlled.

In the short term, though, cost might be king. A cheaper, open-weight model like Kimi K3 could tempt companies to self-host or push for lower prices from existing vendors. Rivals might start leaning harder on specialized tuning, better support, or integration services instead of just competing on raw model performance.

So far, Moonshot hasn’t shed much light on its benchmarking methods, safety plans, or broader business model—beyond when it’ll release the weights and its headline pricing.

It’ll take independent testing to see if Kimi K3 really delivers and stays attractive outside China.

The World Artificial Intelligence Conference wraps on July 20, but everyone’s watching Beijing. The big questions? How will China balance rapid AI growth with new rules, and can Kimi K3 change the way countries and companies jockey for position in the generative AI space?
