Spotify makes music more social with listening activity, Jam requests

New Delhi: Spotify has recently started rolling out a new  feature, which allows users to share what they are streaming in real-time with friends and family through Spotify Messages. Along with the music streaming service, it has also rolled out the Request to Jam feature, a way for Premium users to invite friends into shared listening sessions directly from Messages. They are building on that experience with the two latest Messages features, Listening activity and Request to Jam. Listening activity gives users a real-time look at what music their friends and family are listening to, while Request to Jam makes it easy to quickly turn those moments into shared listening sessions.

If the user isn’t actively listening, their most recently played track will appear instead. Friends can tap on the activity to add songs to their library, start playback, open the track menu, or react with emojis. Importantly, the feature is opt-in, giving users complete control over whether their listening activity is visible. Users can track listening activity through Privacy and social settings, accessible through the side drawer next to the view profile button. Once enabled, activity appears in the chat row of the side drawer and at the top of Messages chats.

If the users tap on their friend and family member’s listening activity, they are able to add tracks to their library, start playback, open the track’s context menu, or react with one of six standard emojis. Listening activity is only shared with people users already messaged on Spotify, and users are always in control; only the contacts users choose can see their activity, and users can turn it off at any time.
