EV Design is about to change, says Honda Outlier Concept Designer

New Delhi: Honda has recently shared a deeper look into the thinking behind the EV Outliner Concept. This is not a regular motorcycle idea with an electric drivetrain placed in. Yuya Tsutsumi, Honda’s Large Project Leader for the project, frames the Outliner as a deliberate break from the boundaries. In his words, the term outliner is meant to signal something that does not stay within familiar lines because Honda wants its electric motorcycle work to evolve the category rather than replace internal combustion engines. The Outliners styling is tied to Honda’s broader family feeling for electric motorcycles, described as Precision of Intrinsic Design.

For this concept, the team has pushed further by defining three key elements. Gliding represents the silent flow of an electric ride, covering acceleration, braking and cornering as one seamless experience. Ecstasy is the instant response and strong torque that can make an electric motorcycle feel alert and connected. Honda argues that the contrast between these two sensations is part of what makes electric power worth exploring properly. The third element, low, is about the lower seating position and the changed point of view for the rider. Honda stated that it deliberately increased the front volume to highlight that low stance, then added a wraparound backrest intended to absorb acceleration forces and support hip-based riding style.

Some of the concept details also show where Honda believes the rider interface can go next. The mirrors are replaced by cameras, feeding into the wide dashboard. The graphical interface is described as showing lean angle and power output in real time, with the goal of tightening the rider-machine link through information and feedback instead of noise. Tsutsumi admits the team fought with the proportions because the petrol motorcycles have well-worn ideas of what looks right. The Outliner tries to make EV-specific packaging and stance feel desirable, and that meant exploring new balances without clear benchmarks. The concept made its world debut at the Japan Mobility Show 2025, and Honda stated it was built to deliver surprise and excitement.
